Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries

  • Traumatic blows. Being struck in the head or having your head slam into objects during a car accident, truck wreck, construction accident, workplace accident, or other impact can cause bruising, bleeding, or tearing of brain tissue.
  • Lack of oxygen. Anoxia, cardiac arrest, near drowning, or other oxygen deprivation kills brain cells rapidly.
  • Toxins and infections. Carbon monoxide, lead, and other toxins, along with some infections, can damage or inflame brain tissue.
  • Tumors. Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors put pressure on delicate brain tissue and blood vessels.
  • Degenerative diseases. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and other illnesses cause progressive brain cell death.

Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury

While a person might exhibit signs of having suffered a TBI immediately after an event, it is also possible that the first signs will not appear until days, even weeks, later. Some brain injury symptoms include:

  • Dizziness or headaches
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Seizures
  • Numbness
  • Paralysis
  • Sensory or perceptual changes
  • Physical, social, or emotional changes
  • Headaches

Long-Term Effects of a TBI

Some traumatic brain injuries are mild, with symptoms disappearing over time with proper attention. However, others are more severe and may result in permanent disability. The long-term or permanent results of brain injury may need post-injury and possibly lifelong rehabilitation. Effects of brain injury may include:

  • Cognitive deficits. Coma, confusion, problem-solving deficits, decreased awareness.
  • Motor deficits. Paralysis or weakness, poor balance, poor coordination, tremors.
  • Perceptual or sensory deficits.  Difficulty speaking and understanding speech (aphasia), Difficulty choosing the right words to say (aphasia), difficulty reading (alexia) or writing (agraphia), and problems with reading, writing, and working with numbers.
  • Functional deficits. Impaired ability with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as dressing, bathing, and eating; problems with organization, shopping, or paying bills; inability to drive a car or operate machinery.
  • Social difficulties. Impaired social capacity results in difficult interpersonal relationships, difficulties in making and keeping friends, and difficulties understanding and responding to the nuances of social interaction.
  • Regulatory disturbances. Fatigue, changes in sleep patterns and eating habits, dizziness, or headache.
  • Personality or psychiatric changes. Apathy, decreased motivation, and emotional irritability.
