Bicycle Accidents

No matter how careful a bicyclist is, the road is a dangerous place to drive or walk or be on. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019 there were 846 cyclist fatalities, which accounted for 2.3 percent of all traffic fatalities during the year. Seventy-eight percent of all cyclists who died in traffic crashes in 2019 were in urban areas. Over the 10-year period from 2010 to 2019, the average age of cyclists killed in traffic crashes has steadily increased from 42 in 2010 to 48 in 2019. A bicyclist hit by a car may suffer catastrophic injuries that include head trauma and/or paralysis.

Bicyclists are subject to many of the same laws and protections as motorists. However, they are often involved in a collision with a motorist who:

E

Operates a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs

E

Exhibits a lack of driver awareness

E

Drives recklessly

E

Follows too closely

E

Is texting

E

Is speeding
